St. Martin's is not just a building and the ministry team, and it is not just Sunday church services! St. Martin's is people, working together to serve each other and our community.
Can you help? There are so many tasks and activities which keep St. Martin's going as an organisation and support our ministries and services. Joining in is also a rewarding social experience - meet people, make friends, share lives.
Here are some of the ways you can help make St. Martin's happen. Just phone or email the office (9880 2137 office@stmartinskillara.org ) or the contact person nominated.
Parish Office: Volunteers help produce the weekly service sheets and bulletins, enter data into databases, answer phones, mail out information... the list is endless. In general, they make things happen (which includes making coffee!)
Brass and Silverware roster: Volunteers polish the brass and silverware used in Holy Communion.
Church preparation: Volunteers assist the Rector in changing the seasonal colours, tidying the pews and changing hymn numbers, in preparation for church services.
Columbarium: Volunteers maintain the Columbarium area and install brass memorial plaques. Contact the office (9880 2137 office@stmartinskillara.org ) or Gai Scott.
Communion servers: Communion servers assist in the administration of Holy Communion. To volunteer, contact Martin Robinson (9880 2137 rector@stmartinskillara.org)
Creche roster: Volunteers provide a creche in the Organ Loft during the 9:30am Family Service. The creche has play equipment, baby changing facilities and a kitchen sink. Internal windows look into the church and sound from the church is piped in, so volunteers and carers can still be part of the service.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes: ESL classes are held in the Parish Hall 10am to 12 noon on Thursdays. This activity is supported by St. Martins as an outreach to newcomers to Australia. To volunteer to assist in classes, contact Meredith Breden or the church office.
Flower arrangement: Volunteers arrange the flowers to decorate the church building for Sunday services. Flowers may be provided by volunteers or donated by others in memory of a loved one.
Lesson Readers: Members of congregations volunteer to read out the Bible readings in each Sunday service.
Linen preparation: Volunteers wash and prepare the linen used on the Holy Table for Communion.
Lady Gowrie Nursing Home Ministry: Volunteers from St Martins assist with moving patients at the Lady Gowrie Nursing Home and Hostel, 10 Edward Street, Gordon, when they attend the monthly chapel service. The task occupies two hours one morning per month. Contact the office if you can help.
Lourdes Village Ministry: A service of Holy Communion is conducted in the chapel of Lourdes Village on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. Volunteers push wheelchair patients to and from the Lourdes chapel. Attendance at the service is optional.
Maintenance – Buildings and Equipment: Volunteers assist in maintaining the built assets and equipment of the parish.
Maintenance – Grounds and Gardens: Volunteers tidy the paths and tend to the shrubs and flower beds.
Sidespersons and welcomers: Sidespersons hand out prayer books before the 8 am and 11 m services, collect them after the service and tidy the pews, and collect the offertory during the service. Welcomers provide a greeting and information to people who come to our Sunday services, especially visitors and newcomers.
