English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes
ESL classes are held in the Parish Hall 10am to noon on Thursdays during State school terms. This activity is supported by St. Martins as an outreach to newcomers to Australia.
English is taught in a friendly relaxed atmosphere with trained teachers. Conversation is encouraged and practical lessons are taught such as visiting the doctor or speaking to the teacher at your child's school.
To participate or volunteer to assist in running classes, contact Meredith Breden or the Parish office. If you are helping someone who needs to learn English, contact the office to arrange their attendance by phoning 9880 2137 or

Message from the ESL Team
Several years ago, volunteers from the St Martin’s congregation embarked on a new challenge. The challenge was to engage with people in the Killara district whose first language is not English. Our Cantonese minister at the time, Peter Chung, encouraged and assisted us.
Students are from Korea, mainland China, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Hungary, Pakistan, Iran and Taiwan. Each student shares their cultural heritage, together with their newer experiences of living in Sydney. It is an enriching time within the group.
Lessons range from the practical: recipe ideas, schooling in Sydney, writing diaries and short stories, as well as discussing and contrasting aspects of life.
Many students, but not all, have a Christian background and are active in their national church. Some have become Christians in Australia. All are interested in sharing their faith stories and the conversations are far reaching.
Friendships have been formed and email addresses exchanged. As people return to their homeland conversations thus continue and the warm relationship is firmly established.
Each of us enjoy the morning together.
For further information about bringing a student or becoming a volunteer, please speak to one of the group or ring the office.
